Pub Football Trivia is eleven football quiz games in one free mobile web app — built for the argument-settling end of a pub table. Name the top scorers, guess the player from their transfers, fill a real team sheet from a famous night, or count down from 501 using goal tallies instead of darts. No download, no sign-up: it runs in your browser and plays like an app.

The data

Every round is generated from a real football database — more than 27,000 players and over 110,000 season stat lines (one for each player, club and league season) across six leagues: the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, the Scottish Premiership and the Brasileirão. All six hold appearances and goals for every season from 1992/93 to 2026/27, and the games use the lot. The finer detail starts later. Minutes, assists and cards go back to 1992/93 only in the Premier League; in Spain, Italy and Germany they begin in 2000/01, so the records pages and the blog tables count those leagues from there; in Scotland they begin in 2014/15, and in Brazil they are patchy from 2014. On top of that sit the finals of the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Scottish Cup, the World Cup, the Euros and the Copa Libertadores, which is where the famous team sheets in Starting 11 come from. That’s the point of the app: answers you can check, arguments you can actually settle.

Those figures are rounded down on purpose. The database grows as the pipeline refreshes, and a number quoted to the nearest thousand stays true between refreshes where a precise one would quietly stop being accurate the week after it was written.

Generated, not written, is the important part. Nobody sits down and authors a question list — the games are built to interrogate the database directly, which is why the same game gives you a different board every time and why you can narrow it to a competition and an era before you start. It also means the app can ask questions nobody would think to write down: the eleventh-highest scorer in a league you thought you knew inside out, or which forgettable mid-table side a well-travelled journeyman turned out for in 2011.

The trade-off is that football data is genuinely messy. Sources disagree about transfer dates, loan spells, which cup competitions count towards a total, and how to spell a name that has three legitimate spellings. We reconcile what we can and take the rest on the chin. Spot something wrong and it gets fixed for everyone — corrections are the single most useful thing you can send us.

How it’s meant to be played

Solo on the bus works fine, but the app was designed around a table. One person hosts on their phone, reads the prompt out, and everyone else shouts. Add the names before you start and the app keeps score, so the round ends with a standing that somebody will dispute. Nothing needs installing on anyone else’s phone, which is the whole reason it’s a website and not an app-store download — a pub table is exactly the worst place to ask five people to install something.

There’s a small pool of free hints each day, shared across the table in multiplayer, so a stuck round has a way out that still costs something. And there’s one daily challenge, identical for everyone playing your league, for the people who want a streak to protect.

Who makes it

It’s an independent project — one football fan building the quiz app their own pub table wanted, not a media company. The app is free with ads; a one-off purchase removes them. How we handle data is set out plainly in the privacy policy.
