The best single-season assist records in Europe

De Bruyne's 20 for Wolfsburg in 2014/15 set the Bundesliga record of its time, in a season when Wolfsburg finished second and won the German Cup. Manchester City bought him that summer. Five years later he made 20 again in the Premier League, equalling Henry's record, and his 17 in 2016/17 makes a third row. No one else has reached 20 in two different leagues.

His assists came from a particular kind of pass: the low, hard cross from the right half-space, aimed at the area between the goalkeeper and the last defender, where a striker only has to arrive. Raheem Sterling, Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jesus scored a great many of them. It is a pass that depends on forwards making the run, and City's made it constantly.

Özil's two rows show a similar range. He made 18 for Real Madrid in 2011/12, feeding Ronaldo in the season Ronaldo scored 46, and 19 for Arsenal in 2015/16, one short of Henry's record, after a first half of the season in which he had looked certain to break it. It is the most famous near-miss in this table.

Thierry Henry's 20 assists in 2002/03 came in a season when he also scored 24 Premier League goals. Salah's 2024/25, below, is the only English season in the table that comes close. Henry's is the earlier and purer case of a centre-forward who was also his team's chief creator.

Frank Lampard's 18 for Chelsea in 2004/05 came in the season Chelsea won their first league title in fifty years, under José Mourinho. Lampard was a goalscoring midfielder, but that year his passing to Didier Drogba and Arjen Robben mattered as much as his goals. Fàbregas made 18 for Chelsea a decade later, in 2014/15, in another Mourinho title-winning side, and 17 for Arsenal in 2007/08 as a twenty-year-old.

Fàbregas's 18 in 2014/15 came in his first season back in England after three years at Barcelona, and many of them were for Diego Costa, who scored 20 that season. Fàbregas had left Arsenal as their captain and returned to London with their rivals. It is one of the clearest cases in the table of a single pass, the ball over the top for a runner, being worth a whole season's assists.

Mohamed Salah's 18 for Liverpool in 2024/25 came with 29 goals, which made him the league's top scorer as well. Messi's 21 in 2019/20 is the only other row from a player who finished his league's scoring chart in first place that same season.

Müller's three rows are 21 in 2019/20, 19 in 2020/21 and 18 in 2021/22, three consecutive seasons in his early thirties. His 21 broke De Bruyne's Bundesliga record. Most of them were for Lewandowski, who scored 34, 41 and 35 in those three seasons, and the two careers explain each other: few strikers have ever had a provider so consistent, and few creators had a finisher so reliable.

Emil Forsberg's 18 for RB Leipzig in 2016/17 came in the club's first Bundesliga season, when Leipzig finished second. Michael Olise's 19 for Bayern in 2025/26 is the most recent row on the table.

Why no Serie A seasons? The best Italian single seasons in this data fall a few short of the cut. Assists in Serie A have tended to be spread across more players, and Italy produced no creator-and-finisher partnership in these years to match Müller and Lewandowski for output.

In this data, Bruno Fernandes's 21 in 2025/26 is the first Premier League season above 20 assists, more than two decades after Henry set the mark. Fernandes takes most of Manchester United's corners and free kicks, and a set-piece taker collects assists that an open-play creator cannot. That is not a criticism. A corner that reaches a scorer's head counts the same as a through ball, and the best set-piece deliverers have always done well from it.

It does mean the assist table is not a pure ranking of passing. Henry's came mostly from open play, from a centre-forward who drifted wide to create. De Bruyne's were a mix. Fernandes's include a large share of dead balls. All three are real records, measuring slightly different skills, and the caveat under the table about providers applies here more than anywhere.

Messi's three rows come from three different Barcelona sides: 2010/11 with 19, 2014/15 with 18, and 2019/20 with 21, which came when he was 32, after his scoring had begun to fall from its peak. Xavi's 19 in 2008/09, Pep Guardiola's first season, is the only row from a central midfielder in Spain, and it came in the year Barcelona won the league, the cup and the Champions League.

For Top 10, a single-season assist board is one of the hardest to complete, because almost nobody remembers assist totals the way they remember goals. Start with the three on 21 and De Bruyne, then work through the title-winning sides, Chelsea in 2004/05 and 2014/15 and Bayern from 2019 to 2022, before adding Henry's Arsenal of 2002/03.
